Job Title: Head of Faculty - English
Location: The Greater Horseshoe School, Heathfield, TQ12 6RH
Hours: 40.5 hours per week | Monday to Friday | 8:30am – 4:40pm (except Tues which is 5pm due to staff training)
Salary: From £44,000 per annum (depending on experience, not pro rata)
Contract: Permanent | Term time only
Start: November 2026

About the Role
As Head of Faculty, you will provide strategic leadership across your subject area, driving high-quality teaching, learning and assessment to raise achievement and improve outcomes for all students. Working closely with the Headteacher and wider leadership team, you will lead curriculum development, monitor progress, support staff development, and champion literacy and reading interventions across the school.
You will play a key role in promoting inclusive practice, supporting students with SEN, including ASC, and ensuring every student can access a stimulating and ambitious curriculum. Through outstanding classroom practice, effective use of data, and strong collaboration with families and external agencies, you will contribute to whole-school improvement and help create an environment where all students can thrive.
What you will be doing
- Lead and develop teaching, learning and assessment across the faculty to raise standards and improve student outcomes.
- Drive literacy, reading development and intervention strategies across the school.
- Support curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation to ensure a broad, engaging and effective learning experience.
- Monitor student progress and attainment, using assessment data to identify priorities and drive improvement.
- Support and coach teaching staff, sharing best practice and delivering training where appropriate.
- Promote inclusive learning approaches that enable students with SEN and ASC to thrive.
- Work collaboratively with families, external agencies and colleagues to support student success.
- Manage faculty resources effectively, ensuring high-quality learning environments and value for money.
- Contribute to whole-school improvement priorities and help shape the strategic direction of the school.
- Maintain the highest standards of safeguarding, behaviour, wellbeing and professional practice.
What you will bring
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) required
- Has a proven track record of successful teaching and leadership.
- Strong subject knowledge and experience of curriculum development.
- Is passionate about improving outcomes for students with SEN and additional needs.
- Understands effective teaching, assessment and intervention strategies that support student progress.
- Can inspire, motivate and develop colleagues through coaching and leadership.
- Uses data confidently to evaluate performance and identify areas for improvement.
- Shares our belief that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed and flourish.
About Us
The Greater Horseshoe School is an independent special school near Newton Abbot in Devon, providing education for young people with complex needs. Our main school site is set in a peaceful woodland environment and supported by a nearby care farm as well as a music and media specialist site, we combine academic and vocational programmes with outdoor learning and therapeutic approaches tailored to each pupil’s individual strengths and needs.
